Superstay 24 Matte Ink Lipstick Review: Does It Really Stay?

The Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick has been around for quite some time and continues to wow its customers with its staying power and highly pigmented shade range. I was so excited to try it because I’d seen it at my local drug store and never had the chance to get my hands on it!

As this lipstick is supposed to last long on the lips, I wanted to make sure that it would stand up to drinking coffee, eating hot foods, and mask-wearing. I did all of these things, and I’m excited to tell you how this lipstick turned out! So without further ado, let’s jump into this review!

Key Features

Maybelline states that this liquid lipstick provides a flawless matte finish and supersaturated shade that lasts up to 16 hours. The applicator of this product is also unique, being in an arrow shape for precise application. In my opinion, the applicator isn’t as special as Maybelline purports, as I’ve seen a few other brands’ lipsticks that have this same applicator.

What’s great about this product is that it is available at most drugstores and comes in 40 shades, so there is a color that everyone can enjoy. I gravitated towards the shade ‘Dreamer,’ which is a light purplish-pink shade.

Pros:

  • Highly pigmented application, especially from deeper shades;
  • Huge range of colors to choose from- there are 40!;
  • Maybelline’s Virtual ‘Try on’ feature lets you see what shade works best for you from the convenience of your phone;
  • Widely available at drugstores with a Maybelline kiosk;
  • Quick-drying formula means you can apply and get back to your day!

Cons:

  • The quick-drying formula can cause a ‘lip cracking’ effect for those with dry lips;
  • The entire 40 shade range can’t always be found at each Maybelline kiosk;
  • It can be pretty hard to take off at the end of your day.

Where and What To Buy

If you’re looking to pick up the Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink, I recommend checking out your favorite local drugstore, as they are likely to have a Maybelline kiosk. You can find a ton of other great Maybelline products there, too, while you’re at it. If you want to know exactly where to find a kiosk in your area, check out this handy store locator here.

As I mentioned before, there are 40 shades of this product available and what’s great about this range is that they have a wide range of nude, red, pink, purple, and coral hues, so you can find your next perfect shade.

First Impressions & Application

I quite like the packaging of this lipstick; its rectangular shape means that if it’s placed on a table, it won’t roll off. I find the shade to be a little light for my skin tone, but I think if I had a full face of makeup on, I wouldn’t look so washed out. I am a sucker for light-pink shades, though, and I’m excited to see what it looks like on a night out!

The application of this product was quite easy, and I did use a matching lip-liner. However, it’s not completely necessary. I used a dark lip-liner to balance the lightness out, but because the lipstick is so full coverage, they didn’t mix very well.

Usually, when you use a lip liner with a full-coverage liquid lipstick, you have to be careful to apply them one after the other; once the liquid lip dries down, it won’t be able to mix properly with any other products. The great news is that you don’t have to spend money on a lip liner with this Maybelline lip!

All-Day Wear

This lipstick really did wear well throughout my day, even though it wasn’t truly 16 hours. I did find that it started to look a bit separated, and it settled a bit into my lip lines, but that is to be expected with a super matte finish. I would say that because the formula is quite drying, it would be best not to heavily layer the lipstick during touch-ups, as it might look a bit ‘cakey’ afterward.

I tried out the face mask and coffee drinking tests during my day to see if this liquid lip formula could hold up. I usually drink my coffee in the morning and one in the afternoon.

When I first drank from my mug, I was surprised that it barely left any residue at all; normally, liquid lipsticks leave some form of residue, whether that be some color or a slight waxy film. In terms of my mask interfering with the lipstick, I found that it didn’t leave any residue throughout the day. I usually walk around with it on for long periods too, so it’s safe to say that Maybelline’s claims to hold up!

If you do find that you want to touch up this lipstick, I’ll let you in on a few little makeup artist insider tips! As I mentioned above, if you re-apply this liquid lipstick too many times throughout the day, it’ll start to look heavy or cakey due to the nature of the formula. Here are a few things you can do to get the best out of all-day wear:

  1. Always make sure to use a lip primer before you make your initial application; this will not only ensure you need fewer touch-ups but will also create a smoother base for you to work with;
  2. Gently wipe away any dried lipstick flakes that are sitting on top of your lips with a dry tissue; this ensures that you don’t seal in extra product with a fresh new layer of lipstick;
  3. Only touch-up specific areas that have worn away so that you don’t build up unnecessary products;
  4. Lastly, if you’re wearing your lipstick from day to night, I recommend removing it with a makeup wipe and applying a brand new coat. If your lipstick has endured a couple of meals and some hot drinks, the best thing you can do for it is to start at square one; imagine all of the extra product and food/drink oils that will follow you into a night out!

Alternatives

Rimmel Stay Matte Liquid Lipstick

This liquid lipstick has been around for about the same time as the Superstay Matte Ink. What is great about this alternative is that you can find it at pretty much every drugstore that carries a Rimmel kiosk!

Rimmel claims that this matte liquid lipstick is kiss-proof, touch-proof, and waterproof, which sounds pretty great to me! It comes in 28 different colors that range from nude to pink to red and even fun colors like blue and black! I would give this one a try the next time you visit your local drugstore!

Wet n Wild MegaLast Liquid Catsuit Matte Lipstick

This liquid lipstick has a unique application process; it goes on glossy and then dries down to a super matte finish. Wet n Wild stresses that this liquid lip will deliver intense pigment without drying out the lips.

The MegaLast Liquid Catsuit lipstick comes in 10 different shades ranging from a few nudes, one pink, a few purples, and one grey. You can find this lipstick at most local drugstores. However, they might not have every shade available.

E.L.F. Liquid Matte

This liquid lipstick is slightly different than most matte liquid lipsticks in that it’s infused with a vitamin formula to deliver wear that’s also nourishing and moisturizing. When you wear this formula, you can rest assured that you won’t get that lip ‘cracking’ effect that most matte lipsticks can give you.

This liquid lipstick comes in seven different colors that are a mix of nudes, pinks, and reds. I think that E.L.F. should release a wider variety of colors as this formula seems like a winner. You can find this liquid lipstick at most local drugstores and on the E.L.F. website as well.

COVERGIRL Melting Pout Matte Liquid Lipstick

This liquid lipstick is an intensely pigmented gel-cream that glides on without being sticky or tacky. It’s also infused with nourishing ingredients, so you get a velvety-soft application every time. COVERGIRL is also leaping bunny and cruelty-free certified so that you can shop with confidence.

This liquid lipstick comes in 12 different colors and can be found at most local drugstores and on covergirl.com.

FAQs

Question: Can I layer two different liquid lipsticks?

Answer: I wouldn’t recommend layering two different liquid lipsticks, as the nature of the formula means you might not end up with a uniform color on the lips. You could get away with it if you layered them quickly on the lips, one after the other.
Another option, if you wanted to create a unique color, would be to mix on the back of your hand or metal palette and then apply with a brush. Your best choices for mixing would be moisturizing liquid lipsticks, as quick-drying formulas will dry before your new formula is made.

Question: Can I wear liquid lipstick if my lips are chapped?

Answer: You can wear liquid lipsticks if you have chapped lips. Just follow these tips to ensure you get the best out of your application:
First, use a lip scrub just before you apply your liquid lip; gently buff your lips with the scrub and rinse with warm water and a face wash/makeup wipe.
Next, apply a moisturizing lip primer and let it sit for about a minute before applying your lipstick. Be sure not to use chapstick, as the formula could repel your liquid lipstick.
Lastly, try applying your lipstick with a brush; this ensures that you don’t over-apply the product, which can exacerbate the look of dry lips.

Question: On what occasions should you wear liquid lipstick?

Answer: You can wear liquid lipstick on whatever occasion you like! I prefer to wear liquid lipsticks when I have a long day ahead of me or when I want to make an impact with a bold and bright color. The sky’s the limit when it comes to lipstick choices!

Superstay 24 Matte Ink Lipstick Review: Bottomline

I’m quite impressed by the Maybelline Superstay Matte Ink; I think I’ll have to pick up a few more colors to get the most out of the product and its range.

While a few mishaps happened with the test, I think that I’ve found a great staple product that will give me beautiful matte lips for any occasion. I will say that the formula could be quite drying, especially in the winter, so I’d recommend investing in a moisturizing lip primer if you’re going to make it one of your staples.
