Is Too Faced Cruelty Free – Should You Use This Brand’s Makeup Products?

I love the Too Faced brand. I’m a loyal customer of many of its products, especially the translucent setting powder that goes by the name of Born This Way. The company’s products are cute and well-designed, from the lovely packaging to the very core of the makeup item.

Yes, they’re expensive, but the quality and overall value are excellent. What can I say? I’m a sucker when it comes to luxury makeup goods. Don’t judge! But, besides being interested in the latest makeup products and trends, I also love animals and hate it when I find out that a certain brand uses animal testing to develop its goods.

That’s why I wanted to talk about Too Faced and their makeup collections. I picked this topic today because this brand sells some of my favorite skincare and makeup products.

Bottom Line Up Front!

Yes, Too Faced is a cruelty-free makeup brand. It’s PETA-certified. Moreover, I appreciate the manufacturer’s strategic decision to keep creating these products in the US instead of moving these operations to China. Otherwise, it would’ve been more challenging for the brand to remain cruelty-free.

I’ve always loved Too Faced products, and the fact that they’re against animal testing makes me appreciate their products even more.

A Bit About the Company – History Overview

Behind the success story of the Too Faced brand, there are two founders: Jeremy Johnson and Jarrod Blandino. They founded the company in 1998.

The brand was welcomed by many people right from the very first moment. Too Faced’s original makeup product was an innovative glitter eye shadow featured in Vogue magazine. At the time, clients could purchase it from any Sephora store.

Here’s one of the things I love about this cruelty-free makeup brand. Not only is Too Faced based in the United States, but they also develop and manufacture all their items in the US. From contouring brushes and face creams to eyeliners and makeup kits, there’s nothing you cannot find on the brand’s website.

The Lip Injection product was launched in 2005 and soon after became a revolutionizing and highly popular lip gloss. Too Faced’s first eye shadow palette appeared in 2006, while in 2013, the well-known Better Than Sex mascara was launched on the market.

I love that mascara, especially the volumizing version. At the same time, I prefer the waterproof alternative less since I find it difficult to remove.

Soon after, this fabulous mascara becomes one of the brand’s iconic products. My favorite Too Faced collection, Born This Way, was developed in 2015 and consists of a wonderful complexion line such as foundation, powders, flattering and pigmented eye shadows, highlighters, concealers, and more. That sounds better than music for my ears.

In 2019, the brand’s first-ever skincare line appeared on the market and took it by storm.

Too Faced Collections

On the company’s online platform, you’ll find well-structured information. Too Faced markets several collections:

Born This Way

The Born This Way powder was the first Too Faced product I tried, and ever since that first purchase, I have never used anything else than this fantastic translucent setting powder. So, alongside Better Than Sex, Born This Way is also one of my favorite collections. It comes with an entire line of long-lasting foundations, eye shadows, setting powders, concealers, and highlighters. I like the effort of the company to focus on a woman’s natural beauty when developing these goods;

Better Than Sex

Being one of my favorite Too Faced collections, Better Than Sex helps you achieve voluptuous and volumized lashes with mascaras, eyeliners, and faux lashes;

Hangover Skincare Products

This is the collection you want to go through if you’re searching for a replenishing and hydrating facial cream. I love its nourishing night creams, hydrating serums, and purifying foam cleansers;

Peaches and Cream

The name of this collection sounds lovely to me. It makes me think of some exotic desserts. It contains matte makeup products, while the most popular item is the Peach mist setting spray;

Clover

Clover, the founders’ dog, inspired this cruelty-free collection. Part of the collection’s profits goes to some of the most important animal charities and organizations;

Brow Collection

There are three iconic products in this collection that will transform your brows: a pomade pencil that shapes and fills your brows, a super-fine brow detailer that defines your brows, and the brow wig, which has the texture of a gel and makes your brows look fluffier and fuller;

Primed and Poreless

Both the primer and the powder included in this collection will make your skin smooth while reducing pores and concealing any imperfections you might want to hide;

Too Femme

This is a relatively new collection with a very appealing name. The collection consists of limited edition makeup products. I love how feminine they are and the focus on sweet shades like pastel pink and baby blue;

Lady Bold Collection

I admire how the founders wanted to make us feel bolder and more confident with this collection. What I love about Lady Bold are the shades and shapes of these makeup products. They’re sexy and decadent. This collection is made of lipsticks and lip liners;

Plumping Station

I haven’t tried these plumping lip glosses yet, but they’re on my list since Mother Nature hasn’t gifted me with voluptuous lips. These products aim to fill, plump, and lift your natural lips, making them look amazing. Recently, the Plump prime face plumper has joined the collection.

Is the Too Faced Brand Cruelty-Free?

Yes, it is a cruelty-free brand. According to their online statements, they sell PETA-certified goods, and they are doing anything possible to keep avoiding animal testing. Additionally, to ensure they continue producing ethical makeup items, the founders and representatives decided not to move the manufacturing operations overseas to China. Instead, they kept the entire business in the US. I appreciate their efforts and will continue to use Too Faced makeup products.

I’m already addicted to their Better Than Sex mascara and the Born This Way powder.

What Are Cruelty-Free Makeup Products?

If you want something extra that’s more than cruelty-free, you should opt for vegan makeup goods. This is because they don’t contain any animal-derived substances. However, Too Faced isn’t entirely vegan, but it’s a cruelty-free brand. In other words, the company’s workers hadn’t conducted animal testing when they developed their products.

A brand is cruelty-free as long as a company doesn’t harm or kill animals to create and market its goods. I would go even further and say that, to me, as well as to PETA (among other organizations), this concept involves only those businesses that don’t have anything to do with animal testing.

So, as long as Too Faced doesn’t test its beta products on any animals, I will continue using its products since I like them so much.

What Are the Certifications that State a Product’s Cruelty-Free Trait?

Usually, I check the product’s packaging or label to see if it mentions the cruelty-free term. If not, I’m looking for the certification’s logo, which can be given by PETA, a cruelty-free bunny logo, or another organization. Of course, when you cannot find these icons on the product’s wrapping label, you could always verify the company’s statement regarding this aspect by visiting its website.

Makeup products can receive the title of cruelty-free or the vegan cruelty-free certificate. In addition, PETA has agreed that all cruelty-free items should feature a specific logo on their packaging. That icon showcases a pink-eared rabbit. PETA named this outstanding initiative Beauty Without Bunnies.

Another organization that can provide companies with this sort of certificate is the Leaping Bunny. Unlike PETA, Leaping Bunny does a more thorough job by requiring businesses to offer multiple files and documentation that prove the items aren’t tested on animals.

There are official and unofficial cruelty-free logos; you must pay attention to them if you want to use the right makeup products.

What Does Too Face Say About Being Cruelty-Free?

The company announces to website visitors that the brand is cruelty-free from the start, from the homepage. You can see that note on the top part of the page, in the right corner. According to the brand’s statement, Too Faced is committed to selling cruelty-free makeup goods.

Not only does Too Faced avoid animal testing, but they also choose to collaborate with third-party companies that apply the same cruelty-free policy. I appreciate this since not many other brands take this ethical path. Moreover, they don’t test any ingredients or finished items on animals. Another aspect I like about this brand is its vegan-friendly trait.

Both founders love animals and do whatever they can to treat them with the respect and care they deserve. Even when it comes to Too Faced makeup brushes, the company’s creators came up with a great solution to avoid using natural hair. Instead, they collaborated with experienced wig makers to develop brushes made of synthetic fibers that are as soft as natural hair.

My Favorite Too Faced Products

As I said, two of my favorite Too Faced items are the Born This Way powder and the Better Than Sex mascara. The first one keeps my complexion matte and sebum-free for hours, while the second product volumizes my lashes, and it’s long-lasting.

But, besides these, you should get acquainted with other great products made by Too Faced. Here are some of them. I’ve chosen them based on their features, effectiveness, and popularity.

1. Lip Injection Lip Gloss

Lip Injection Lip Gloss

I fancy this lip injection gloss since it’s supposed to make my lips fuller and more voluminous. But, on the other hand, it’s a controversial product. Some clients are more than happy with the results, while others state the instant effect doesn’t last very long. So, I would have to reapply multiple times a day.

I love the instant effect and the glossy finish.

Pros

  • This lip plumper is almost natural since it’s formulated with safe ingredients;
  • Your lips will look fuller and well-hydrated;
  • It doesn’t contain parabens and sulfates;
  • You can wear it as it is or apply it on top of your regular lipstick.

Cons

  • The cooling sensation makes my lips tingle, so I don’t know if I could stand that sensation if I’m supposed to apply it more than once per day;
  • If you have very sensitive skin, you might want to use this product carefully because you might not like the stinging sensation.

2. Soleil Chocolate Bronzer

too faced Soleil Chocolate Bronzer

I have fair skin, or as I like to call it, skin as white as cheese. So, I love to achieve that nice tan look, and the Soleil chocolate bronzer made by Too Faced helps me do exactly that. My go-to shade is light/medium, but you could also opt for the dark chocolate alternative based on your skin type and color.

I like the matte finish my skin has after applying this bronzer. It provides medium coverage and is pretty easy to use and blend.

Pros

  • My skin feels smooth with this bronzer;
  • It doesn’t clog;
  • You’ll achieve that great summer glow.

Cons

  • It’s expensive;
  • It smells a bit funny.

3. Primed and Poreless Face Primer

Primed and Poreless Face Primer

This Too Faced primer is excellent for creating a smooth and blurry skin effect. It reduces your enlarged pores, and it’s suitable for oily skin. I have a mixed skin type, but I still use this product without any issues whatsoever. In addition, the formula allows you to apply the product under other makeup layers such as foundations, bronzers and setting powders.

Pros

  • My skin looks fresher, illuminated, and plumper with this primer;
  • I use it in the morning when my face looks tired and before leaving the house because it keeps my foundation locked into place;
  • It’s great at reducing large pores.

Cons

  • If you have dry skin, this product might not suit you.

4. Hangover Pillow Cream

Hangover Pillow Cream

I love this luxurious face cream. The Hangover Pillow cream might be pricey, but it does its job wonderfully. It’s formulated with numerous effective ingredients. In addition, the cream is backed by science and recommended by dermatologists. So, this is a must-have product for me since I always seem to struggle with tired skin.

The scent couldn’t be better. It mixes two of my favorite fragrances: mango and coconut. However, I must confess that, although it’s supposed to be used at night, I also apply the cream during the day.

Pros

  • It rejuvenates and replenishes your skin during the night;
  • The perfume is mood-lifting so that you can sleep better and wake up well-rested;
  • This ultra-nourishing night moisturizer makes your face glow.

Cons

  • A bit expensive.

5. Born This Way Foundation

Born This Way Foundation

The Born This Way foundation might be expensive, but it’s highly effective and provides excellent coverage. I use light beige or ivory shades, but you can choose from a wide range of available colors. I love the lightweight texture of this product. Moreover, I always use it with the brand’s translucent setting powder to complete a matte look.

If you were looking for a long-lasting and waterproof foundation, this is it.

Pros

  • You will get medium to full coverage, which is amazing;
  • It has a lightweight texture;
  • It comes in many great shades so that you can select the most suitable one for your skin color;
  • I am amazed at how flawless my skin looks whenever I apply it. It almost feels like I’m not wearing any makeup.

Cons

  • It’s expensive;
  • You might feel a sticky sensation if you apply too much of it.

Too Faced Main Alternatives

Now, I want to talk a bit about the main alternatives to Too Faced. The following beauty brands are also cruelty-free, and I’ve picked them due to their popularity and high-quality makeup products.

1. Dose of Colors

dose of colors

Dose of Colors is another great cruelty-free brand, although its products aren’t vegan. Still, you’ll find vegan products on their official website. They have everything from foundations and concealers to makeup sponges, lip balms, and eye shadows. I love their creamy lipsticks and highlighters.

2. bareMinerals

bareminerals products

Another PETA-certified makeup brand is bareMinerals. The brand’s iconic product is the mineral-based foundation. I love how they focus on providing clean items. All their skin-improving formulas are pure and cruelty-free without sacrificing performance. Moreover, they conduct clinical tests on all their goods.

3. Nude by Nature

Nude by Nature

The third cruelty-free brand alternative I wanted to present today is Nude By Nature. I love their motto, which says they’re offering great makeup products that are good for your skin instead of slowly damaging it. In addition, I consider the brand’s name genuinely inspiring and relevant to what this company stands for.

All their products are natural, non-toxic, and free of synthetic compounds.
