NYX Fill and Fluff Review & Guide

As a makeup fanatic, I know the importance of good eyebrows. I get brow jealousy really quickly and always want to up my brow game with new and exciting products. I like to keep my eyebrows close to natural, using products that enhance them. I love big fluffy eyebrows (no plucking for me, please), so I was pretty excited to try out the NYX Fill and Fluff eyebrow pencil!

So, what is it all about? Is this eyebrow pencil worth buying? Read my total NYX Fill and Fluff review and guide to find out if this product is for you!

Bottom Line Up Front

The pomade eyebrow pencil applies easily, but I am unsure about calling it ‘pomade.’ It doesn’t feel as waxy as a usual pomade. It seems to work just as a pencil, rather than adding a lot of depth and stick depth to the eyebrows. The ‘fluffing’ brush is misnamed, too. It is a brilliant brush for blending the pencil, but it doesn’t fluff out the eyebrows.

However, if you are looking for defined and sculpted eyebrows, this is fairly easy to use and affordable at $12. The brush does blend the brows really well, and the angled pencil allows you to apply the product with ease.

How To Pick Eyebrow Products

Picking eyebrow products can be pretty confusing because there are so many different products out there! So, what are some things to consider when shopping for eyebrow products?

Your Eyebrow Goals

When shopping for brow products, your eyebrow goals are the first thing to consider. Do you pluck and shape your eyebrows, or leave them natural? Are you looking for defined shapes or big and fluffy brows? I leave my eyebrows natural and look for products to darken and fluff.

So, I will always use eyebrow mascara. I will sometimes add a bit of brow pencil in there but never rely on the pencil to get my brows how I want them. However, you should purchase eyebrow pencils or pomades if you like defined eyebrows. These products allow you to add shape to your brows.

Color

When shopping for eyebrow pencils and products, it is super important to find the right color match. The general rule is to go a few shades darker than your natural hair color if you have light hair, adding definition to your brows.

If you have darker hair, finding the right color match can be a bit difficult! I have naturally dark brown hair, and there have been a few times I have bought eyebrow products that are just too dark. I usually go for color the same as my natural hair or a little bit lighter. This allows me to add shade and depth to the brows without them looking… dramatic.

Ethics

Ethics are essential to me, so I will always try to find cruelty-free and vegan products. All NYX products are cruelty-free; many are vegan (including their Fill and Fluff eyebrow pencil).

NYX Fill and Fluff Review

So, let’s get to it! What are my thoughts on the NYX Fill and Fluff eyebrow pencil?

The main features of this product are:

  • Smooth and waxy pomade pencil
  • Paddle brush for blending
  • Blendable textures
  • Vegan and cruelty-free

Initial Thoughts

Before trying the product out, it definitely sounded up my street. NYX describes it as an ‘all-in-one’ eyebrow pencil perfect for building ‘bushy boy brows.’ As someone who doesn’t shape or pluck my brows, I was hoping that what NYX was claiming was true.

NYX Fill and Fluff

I am a big NYX fan, especially when it comes to their eye products. My go-to eyebrow product is their Thick It Stick It brow mascara which allows me to add dramatic fluff.

However, I was pretty disappointed by the Fill and Fluff eyebrow pencil. But it is not because it is a bad product. It is just… advertised incorrectly?

Applying the Product

The pomade pencil is really easy to apply. It is an angled brush that allows you to follow the shape of your eyebrows and add depth and color to them. The pencil does not really seem to be a pomade, though, as it isn’t sticky or creamy. It just feels like an eyebrow pencil (but a good one!).

NYX Fill and Fluff

The paddle brush is great for blending the eyebrow pencil, allowing you to create a natural and even look. However, it doesn’t seem to be doing what it claims it can do.

NYX Fill and Fluff applying

It doesn’t add fluff to the brows, so I would advise you to use a spoolie brush to further fluff the brows if that is the type of look you are after. I would also recommend adding a little bit of eyebrow wax for texture and stick when using this product.

Why I Liked the NYX Fill and Fluff Product

I really liked the usability of this product. As someone who rarely used eyebrow pencils, it was nice to try out something that I could get to grips with straight away. You can apply it pretty quickly and get long-lasting defined brows.

The color I picked really suited me, too. I went for espresso, which is the color I use for other NYX brow products. It comes in eight different shades, so you will definitely find the right one for you if you want to buy it.

NYX Fill and Fluff

The brush was good for blending the eyebrow pencil. I have used eyebrow pencils before, which looked too harsh and bold when applied. However, you can use the paddle brush to blend the product to make your brows look natural but defined.

I recommend switching between the two ends of the pencil when using it. Apply a little bit of pencil first, then use the brush. Then, add in some more pencil. This allows you to blend it slowly, making sure you only put on the right amount of product.

The product lasts a long time once applied, which is good and a bit surprising for eyebrow pencils. It is summer in the UK, and we have a heatwave, so I am sweating a lot. But, this was no challenge for the NYX Fill and Fluff pencil!

Why I Didn’t Like the NYX Fill and Fluff Product

Unfortunately for me, there were more things I didn’t like about the product than I did. However, a lot of this was not down to the actual product but how it was advertised.

The paddle brush simply isn’t a fluffing brush but a blending brush. This is okay, but as someone who likes the natural fluffy look, I feel I was misled when buying it. It is not a product to buy if you want big, fluffy boyish eyebrows, despite being described as the ‘boyfriend jean of the eyebrow world’ on the packaging.

If you want to embrace the Cara Delavigne natural brow, I will look at using eyebrow gel and mascara alongside a pencil. Another issue I had with using the eyebrow pencil was how easy it was to break. I accidentally put the wrong top on the pencil end, which crushed the tip. I wasn’t pressing down hard, either!

I then decided to twist out the whole of the eyebrow pencil to see how long it was, and …. it isn’t long. Maybe an inch long? When we consider the normal length of eyebrow pencils, I did wonder how long this product would last if I were to use it every day.

Alternatives We Recommend

The main issue I had with the product was that I didn’t think it did what it claimed to do. So, I thought it would be useful to look at alternative products that are perfect for getting the big, fluffy eyebrows you dream about!

Thick-It Stick It Brow Gel by NYX

Thick-It Stick It Brow Gel by NYX

I mentioned this eyebrow mascara gel before because it is my go-to product for my eyebrows. The Thick it Stick It brow gel by NYX is a fantastic option if you want the natural, fluffy brow look. It works with your eyebrows, adding shade and shape to them.

Honestly, when I wear this product and only this product on my brows, I get so many compliments! People are forever asking me how I do my brows.

It is buildable, which I love. This means you can apply more coats of mascara to your brows to get the look you want. Oh, and the actual product last for ages. I will use it most days, rarely running out and having to buy a new one.

Gimme Brow Volumizing Eyebrow Gel By Benefit

Gimme Brow Volumizing Eyebrow Gel By Benefit

I used to use the Gimme Brow gel before I switched to the NYX product, and it worked really well! It is a great way to easily bush up your eyebrows, adding fluff and color.

It is super easy and quick to apply, meaning you don’t have to mess around blending for ages to get your perfect brow look. The only reason I stopped using it was the price. I found that the NYX Thick it Stick did precisely what I wanted, but for half the price.

Boy Brow By Glossier

Boy Brow By Glossier

This pomade does exactly what it says on the tin! I have heard many good things about this boy brow pomade, but I have yet to try it.

It is designed to add definition and fluff to the brow with a gentle wax that shapes the hairs. It is super easy to use, with a great spoolie that applies the pomade onto the brows.

FAQs

Question: So, is NYX Fill and Fluff an eyebrow pencil or a pomade?

Answer: The NYX Fill and Fluff product is defined as a ‘pomade pencil,’ suggesting that it is a mix of the two. However, it works much better as a pencil than a pomade as there is little wax in the product.

Question: How do you use NYX Fill and Fluff?

Answer: NYX Fill and Fluff is pretty easy to use. You apply the pencil onto the brows, then use the brush to blend the product.

Question: How can I make my eyebrows look fluffy?

Answer: If you are looking for fluffy eyebrows, check out brow mascara and pomades.

Question: How Long does NYX Fill and Fluff Last?

Answer: This product lasts around 12 hours after application.

Is the NYX Fill and Fluff Eyebrow Pomade Pencil Worth It?

This product is perfect for you if you are after sculpted, defined brows. It is easy to use and blend, allowing you to achieve the perfect shape for your brows. The fluffing brush helps you to blend the pencil. However, the pencil is pretty short and breaks easily, so it might not last long!

If you are after boyish, fluffy brows, I will avoid the NYX Fill and Fluff. There are so many better products for natural-looking brows that do precisely what the NYX Fill and Fluff claim to do, but much better.
