Best Tarte Shape Tape Concealer Dupes Guide: Can A Cheaper Concealer Compare to This Icon?

When Tarte’s Shape Tape Concealer came out, I didn’t stop hearing about it. Even a good friend of mine, a drugstore beauty queen, told me she gladly pays the $31 for the concealer.

Even hearing all the hype, I had to roll my eyes. While I love many Tarte products, specifically their lipstick and mascara, I’m so-so about their face products. There was a time when I recommended everyone wear the Amazonian Clay Foundation, which was my HG years ago. But since they changed the formula, I’ve been iffy about that foundation.

Don’t get me wrong–the Shape Tape Concealer is amazing. But you can’t blame me for being skeptical about this concealer, especially since Tarte has a habit of changing their formulas. That’s why I was on the hunt for the best dupes.

Bottom Line Up Front

Out of all these dupes, the e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer is my favorite. This concealer is full-coverage and long-lasting. e.l.f. also offers multiple shades in this concealer, and you can easily see the undertones for each shade on their website.

It has a more hydrating formula than Shape Tape, so it’s better for dry skin types. Because of this, it doesn’t have the same matte finish that Shape Tape has. If you don’t think the e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer is right for you, I suggest considering the other dupes on this list.

What Is Tarte Shape Tape Concealer?

First, let’s explain what Tarte’s Shape Tape Concealer is and what makes it so popular. The Tarte Shape Tape Concealer is a full-coverage concealer with a matte finish, and Tarte promises it lasts as long as 16 hours. It’s formulated with “skinvigorating” ingredients, such as mango butter, shea butter, and licorice root, to keep skin moisturized, retain elasticity, and brighten the complexion.

This is why the concealer offers many benefits, such as making the eyes look lifted and brighter. Since it’s a full-coverage concealer, it’s popular to use under the eyes, to cover blemishes, to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and many users also contour with this concealer.

As you can see from these impressive benefits, there’s a reason why the concealer costs so much. For me, the beneficial ingredients are reason alone to dish out the $30 for the concealer. At the same time, if you only want a multi-functional concealer with great coverage, there are so many other cheaper dupes out there. These dupes perform almost identically to Shape Tape and last just as long.

Tips When Choosing Shape Tape Concealer

There are a lot of great Shape Tape concealer dupes that I will mention, and it can be difficult to choose the right one. Here are some tips I suggest following when going through my list.

Target Areas

First, you’ll want to consider where you’ll use the concealer. Shape Tape is a multi-functional concealer, but most people I talk to use Shape Tape for these reasons:

  • Undereye circles
  • Blemishes
  • Scars
  • Color correction
  • Highlighting and contouring

While Shape Tape can hit all these target areas, not all concealers can. I will recommend different areas where I think the concealer performs best, so use this advice as a guide when finding the best Shape Tape dupe for you.

Your Shade

You’ll obviously want to prioritize dupes that have your shade. Unfortunately, not every brand offers convenient color-matching methods, especially if you can’t access any samples. I’m not even a fan of Tarte’s “Try It On” feature on the website.

Fortunately, Sephora sells the Shape Tape Concealer, and Sephora offers samples. You can also buy a trial-sized version of Shape Tape to ensure it’s the right shade without buying a full-size product. I still suggest seeing if you can get a sample of the concealer, swatching it in-store, or using other “Try It On” features.

Skin Type

Tarte Shape Tape Concealer seems like it’s ideal for nearly every skin type. It has a matte finish, making it the best option for oily skin types. But there are also plenty of moisturizing ingredients to keep dry skin moisturized.

Not all of these dupes have the same benefits, so I suggest knowing your skin type before choosing a dupe. I will try to weigh out any ingredients and finishes that can make these dupes better for certain skin types. Since I have dry skin, I will mention if the concealer flaked or peeled on my skin. Otherwise, if you have oily or combination skin, I suggest reading reviews if I don’t say the concealer has a matte finish.

How I Chose These Dupes

In addition to the points I mentioned previously, I used general shade selection, longevity and performance, popularity, and formula to choose these dupes.
  • Shade selection: Tarte has a very impressive shade selection that ranges from light to deep. I ensured all these dupes were inclusive with their shade selection and offer shades for all clients. This not only includes skin tone but also undertone, since Tarte also offers shades that fit all undertones.
  • Longevity: Tarte promises the Shape Tape concealer lasts for 16 hours. I can’t say I fully agree with that claim, but their concealer is long-lasting. Even though these dupes may not last for 16 hours, I can ensure they will at least last most of the day.
  • Popularity: While I will promote some niche brands here, I’m prioritizing popular and reputable brands. They’re the ones that are most recognizable and have garnered trust among their consumers. Plus, it will be easier for readers to find the products and you may even know someone who uses those products.
  • Formula: Shape Tape Concealer has a silky smooth formula that stays matte all day. It doesn’t crease or leave the skin oily. These are all major selling points for Shape Tape, which is why I tried to find dupes with a similar formula. This way, it will feel and perform just like Shape Tape.

My Favorite Tarte Shape Tape Concealer Dupes

There’s no need to spend $30 on a concealer! Here are the best Tarte Shape Tape Concealer dupes!

e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer

e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer

I debated between mentioning this one and the original Camo Concealer. I’m choosing the Hydrating one since it’s made with powerful ingredients, such as rose flower water and sodium hyaluronate, to hydrate and soothe skin–very similar to the Tarte one.

While it’s the perfect concealer for those with dry and sensitive skin, I wouldn’t recommend this to those with oily skin. It also has a satin finish, and I recommend those with oily skin use a concealer with a matte finish. Fortunately, e.l.f. does offer the original Camo Concealer that you can try instead.

Still, there are many reasons why this concealer is first on my list. For starters, e.l.f. has to be my favorite drugstore makeup brand of all time. While I love some products more than others, everything I’ve used is high-quality. Unlike other competitors, e.l.f. makes their products with good-for-you ingredients that make them ideal for sensitive skin types, like me.

While e.l.f. is sold in many places, such as Target and CVS, that don’t offer samples or try-on products, e.l.f. offers both “Find My Shade” and “Virtual Try-On” tools that are easy to use. They have a wide range of shades that target all skin tones and undertones. You can even filter your skin tone and undertones on the website.

e.l.f. also promises that the concealer lasts 16 hours, and it does last a really long time. It could work for me because it goes well with my dry skin, which has why I recommend this product to those with my skin type. It also applies and blends just like Shape Tape.

Pros

  • Applies well
  • Easy to blend
  • Hydrating ingredients
  • Long-lasting
  • Perfect for those with dry, sensitive, and mature skin

Cons

  • Not a good option for those with oily skin

Revolution Beauty IRL Filter Finish Concealer

Revolution Beauty IRL Filter Finish Concealer

In case you didn’t know, Revolution Beauty now offers a concealer version of their HG foundation, IRL Filter Finish. It not only works as well as the foundation but is the perfect dupe for Shape Tape. Like Shape Tape, the concealer is full-coverage and lasts for 16 hours.

It’s easy to blend and performs well. It has a soft matte finish, so this is a good option for those with oily and combination skin. It’s also made with powerful vegan anti-aging ingredients hyaluronic acid and okra extract (VTOX). There are also plenty of shade options and several dark shade options. I wish Revolution gave you more insight into the undertones, and they don’t offer any virtual try-on tools.

Pros

  • Concealer version of the IRL Filter Finish Foundation
  • Full-coverage
  • Long-lasting
  • Blends easily
  • Soft matte finish
  • Anti-aging ingredients

Cons

  • No virtual try-on tool

L’Oreal Infallible Full-Wear Concealer

l'Oreal infallible full-Wear concealer

As one of the biggest names in the beauty industry, it’s no wonder why L’Oreal is on this list. This is one of their most iconic concealers, and you can buy L’Oreal products at nearly any store. Plus, they’re also available on Amazon.

This concealer has amazing full coverage with a matte finish, just like Shape Tape. The texture is very creamy and easy to blend. Even though there’s an impressive shade selection, I wish it was easier to pick out a concealer shade–L’Oreal doesn’t offer any undertone insights, and it’s difficult to try on a shade in stores. Fortunately, they do offer a virtual try-on tool.

Pros

  • Matte finish
  • Easy to blend
  • Full-coverage
  • Great shade selection

Cons

  • Picking out your shade is difficult

Rimmel Stay Matte Concealer

rimmel stay matte concealer 621 espresso

Rimmel is a hit or miss for me, but I like this concealer for several reasons. Compared to the other dupes, this one is the most versatile. You can use it to brighten up the eyes, and cover imperfections, and the flawless coverage makes it perfect for contouring. You can also use the lighter shades to highlight your brow bones or use your natural shade as an eyeshadow primer.

As the name suggests, it has a matte finish, so it’s perfect for those with oily skin. The texture is thick but creamy, so it’s still blendable. A little bit goes a long way with this one–just an FYI!

The shade range isn’t terrible, but I wish it was better. Plus, they don’t offer any insight into the shade undertones, and there’s no virtual try-on tool on the website. Rimmel also says the concealer lasts 24 hours, but it definitely doesn’t last that long. It’s still pretty long-wearing, though doesn’t perform as well as Shape Tape.

Pros

  • Matte finish
  • Full-coverage
  • Multi-functional concealer

Cons

  • Not as long-lasting as Shape Tape

Wet n’ Wild Mega Last Incognito All-Day Full-Coverage Concealer

wet n wild mega last incognito all-day full-coverage concealer

Wet n’ Wild is another hit-or-miss brand for me, but I do like this concealer. It’s a great Shape Tape concealer, and I also think it compares well to Urban Decay’s All-Nighter Concealer. While Mega Last Incognito doesn’t last as long as Shape Tape, but it will definitely last all day. It’s also full and buildable coverage; while I think it’s better at concealing imperfections like blemishes more than undereye circles, you can still build on the coverage anywhere needed.

This is the best concealer on this list for oily skin–the finish is seriously MATTE. This is a downside for me since my skin is on the dry side. Mega Last Incognito got a little dry and patchy on me; if you have dry skin, just wear a good moisturizer under this one.

I have the same complaints with this concealer as many of the other dupes here. The shade selection isn’t as impressive, and there’s no data about undertones. Wet n’ Wild also doesn’t offer a virtual try-on tool, and it’s impossible to try this concealer on in stores. Plus, it has fragrance, so I wouldn’t recommend this product to those with sensitive skin or anyone allergic to fragrance.

Pros

  • Very affordable–around $5
  • Full and buildable coverage
  • Applies smoothly
  • Blends well
  • Long-lasting

Cons

  • Has a scent
  • Too matte for those with dry skin

Sephora Collection Best Skin Ever Full-Coverage Multi-Use Concealer

sephora collection best skin ever full-coverage multi-use concealer

For years, Sephora Collection has been my go-to brand for affordable face makeup. While this isn’t the cheapest dupe on this list (this concealer is $15), it’s still half the price of the Tarte concealer, and I never had problems with Sephora’s concealers or foundations.

As a multi-use concealer, this one can do it all. I recommend this most to those who want to cover up undereye circles, but it can cover any other imperfections, but it’s also perfect for contouring and highlighting and to use as an eyeshadow primer. I actually love using my Sephora concealer to highlight my brows!

As with all Sephora face products, there are endless shades to choose from. Sephora also provides descriptions for all shades, and you can try them on in-store.

It has a natural finish, which is great for most skin types. Unfortunately, I notice this concealer creases on those with mature skin.

Like Shape Tape, the Best Skin Ever Concealer is made with skin-loving ingredients, such as algae extract and hyaluronic acid. These ingredients protect and hydrate skin, making it one of the best options for dry skin types. However, it does have a scent, so I suggest avoiding this one if you have sensitive skin or can’t handle cosmetics with fragrance. The texture is very heavy, so a little bit goes a long way. Fortunately, it is easy to blend.

Pros

  • Reasonable price
  • Full-coverage
  • Made with skin-loving ingredients
  • Easy to blend

Cons

  • Heavy formulation
  • Not ideal for mature and oily/combination skin types

Ulta Beauty Full-Coverage Liquid Concealer

ulta beauty full coverage liquid concealer

There are many similarities between Ulta’s Full-Coverage Concealer and Shape Tape, and also many differences. I will start with the differences.

Shape Tape has a creamier texture, while Ulta’s is best described as a liquid. This is actually better for people with certain skin types, specifically oily/combination skin, and to target specific areas. I like using this concealer under my eyes, since it’s easier to apply and doesn’t crease or cake up.

Even though Ulta’s concealer has a liquid texture, it offers many of the same benefits as Shape Tape. Ulta’s concealer blends extremely well. I just wish Ulta offered more shades in this concealer, and included more descriptions of the concealer’s undertones.

Pros

  • Blends easily
  • Doesn’t crease into lines under the eye
  • Full-coverage

Cons

  • Not the same texture as Shape Tape

Colourpop Hyaluronic Concealer

Colourpop Hyaluronic Concealer

Colourpop is a brand that I’m really falling in love with. I have several of their products, and they’re all amazing. This is also one of the best drugstore brands for face makeup.

Take this Colourpop Hyaluronic concealer as an example. If you want a concealer with moisturizing properties that’s still ideal for all skin types, I suggest the Hyaluronic Concealer.

As the name suggests, it contains hyaluronic acid so your skin feels cushiony soft. This concealer is also formulated with coconut water for further hydration. It has a very creamy texture, and it blends flawlessly. Not only does Colourpop offer many shade options, but also offers an undertone description for each shade. You can also filter out shades by skin tone and undertone.

Colourpop also offers different tools to find your shade, and you can even match your shade to this concealer with other Colourpop face products. I suggest using these tools since they have a stringent return policy. I even had to go back and forth with customer service once with an order issue.

Pros

  • Moisturizing ingredients
  • Creamy texture
  • Blends easily
  • Many shade options
  • Can use different tools to find your shade
  • Good for all skin types

Cons

  • Natural finish instead of matte finish

PUR Cosmetics Disappearing Ink 4-in-1 Concealer Pen

PUR cosmetics disappearing ink 4-in-1 concealer pen

If you want a medium/buildable coverage alternative to Shape Tape, I suggest this PUR Cosmetics Disappearing Ink 4-in-1 Concealer Pen. While Shape Tape has better coverage, I love the technology that PUR Cosmetics uses to reduce the appearance of imperfections. They use ingredients such as diamond complex to diffuse light and reduce the appearance of dark undereye circles and other imperfections. Like Shape Tape, it applies and blends well.

There are some downsides to this, which is why it’s near the bottom of my list. For example, the pen is pretty hard to use. The product may be defective, but I tend to use this problem with makeup pens. I also wish there was a wider color selection.

Pros

  • Natural-looking concealer
  • Medium/buildable coverage
  • Diamond complex diffuses imperfections rather than covers them
  • Blends easily
  • Applies well

Cons

  • Not as many color options

FAQs

Answer: You bet it is! Apparently, it’s so popular that one is sold every 12 seconds!

Question: I Don’t Like Shape Tape Concealer. Should I Try Another Tarte Concealer?

Answer: I recommend trying the Creaseless Concealer, especially if you’re not a fan of the matte finish or if Shape Tape is too drying for you. I also always liked the Amazonian Clay Concealer.

Question: Has the Shape Tape Concealer Been Discontinued?

Answer: No, but there was a time when the Shape Tape Foundation was pulled off shelves due to non-inclusive shade options. I still don’t think it has inclusive shades at all.

Best Tarte Shape Tape Concealer Dupes: Bottom Line

Out of all these dupes, the e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer is my favorite. e.l.f. is one of my personal favorite makeup brands, so it’s no surprise that they have the best Shape Tape dupe.

Even though this one is ideal for dry skin types, it still has full-coverage benefits and a long wear time. They also have a wide range of shades, and they offer detailed descriptions of the skin shade and undertone on their website.

There are some differences, such as how the e.l.f. dupe doesn’t have the same matte finish that’s perfect for oily skin types. The e.l.f. Hydrating Camo Concealer may not work for you, so I also suggest looking through these other dupes and finding the best one for you.
