In this article, I will be reviewing the Honey Dew Me Up Primer by NYX. Now, I am a big fan of NYX so I was pretty excited to try out this primer. They are cruelty-free and affordable, and NYX has always impressed me with their quality and range. But, is it a yay or nay from me when trying out their Honey Dew Me Up primer?!
How To Choose The Right Primer For You
Primer is a pretty simple product, right? It is a thing that you put on after your skincare routine and before you start putting on makeup. It looks after your skin and complexion and once you begin to use it, it becomes an integral part of your makeup routine!
But, even though all primers aim to do the same thing, there are just so many out there to choose from! This can make shopping for primer kind of confusing.
So, what is the best way to choose the right primer?
It is really important to know your skin and what it needs from products. If you have oily skin, a shiny primer might not be right for you. If you have dry skin, you should find out what primers hydrate! Certain primers have a mattifying quality, and this will only make dry skin worse. However, a mattifying primer will be perfect for oily skin.
If you have an uneven skin tone, there are primers out there that are color-correcting. Also, make sure you get a minimal primer if you have sensitive skin.
Reviews are really useful when picking what primer to use. Most online cosmetic stores have a review section that will have loads of information for you in order to make your choice. You may also want to watch review videos and read blogs about the product. In these, people will discuss their own skin type and how the product works for them.
Use Online Tools
A load of online cosmetic stores have a ‘Try On’ function where you can upload a picture or connect it to your laptop or phone camera. The product will then be virtually put on your face to see what you look like with it on.
To be honest, I don’t know how trustworthy these are, especially with products such as primer. But, it still gives you an idea of what the product will look like.
Talk To Experts
NYX has a function on their website where you can chat live with an expert, and this is really useful if you are unable to go into stores. However, I do recommend talking to an expert in the store as they can discuss your skin type and your needs in much more depth.
Honey Dew Me Up Primer Review
So, onto the review of the Honey Dew Me Up primer!
When the primer first arrived I did think that it seemed quite a small tub of product for the price. Because I use makeup most days, I use a lot of products and I was concerned about how long this primer would last. However, I soon realized after a few days of usage that you don’t actually need to put that much primer on. It is a bit gloopy and therefore you just need to put a little bit on your face and use your hands to rub it in.
I normally go for spray primer as I like the hydrating feeling, so I was also a bit dubious about using a gel type. It comes with a little spatula that you use to apply the primer to your face. My skin does sometimes dry out, so I do like a primer that hydrates and moisturizes. I was worried that this product might be a bit cakey and heavy.
I was very excited about the gold flicks that are in the product. I am a huge fan of anything glittery and sparkly when it comes to makeup!
When putting the Honey Dew Me Up primer on at first, I was pleasantly surprised at the hydrating and light feel of it on my face. NYX definitely proved me wrong with my initial hesitations about this primer, and it felt good to my skin as soon as I applied it. The spatula is a bit strange, I must admit. I don’t really think that it is the best way of putting on the primer as the primer itself is a bit gloopy.
Honey Dew Me Up as a Base for Makeup
After putting on the primer I waited a few minutes before doing my makeup. I rarely use foundation or concealer, but the day I tried out the primer I had a blemish on my cheek so dabbed some concealer and powder on. The products I was using were cheap drugstore brands but went on well over the primer. I did think that the primer helped in the overall look of my skin and aided in covering up and reducing redness and blemishes.
I had put the primer all over my face, and it was definitely a good base for my eye makeup. My eyeliner and eyeshadow went on well and evenly.
A Day of Wearing Honey Dew Me Up Primer
The primer did give me a long-lasting dewy and glowing complexion. To be honest, I wasn’t a big fan of the gold flecks. They were just randomly dotted around my face and kind of looked like they were put on by accident. I don’t really think they were necessary for the primer and seemed like they were more of an afterthought by NYX. Apparently, they are supposed to enhance your glow, but I don’t think they do this at all.
Plus, if you do wear foundation I don’t think you would be able to see the gold flecks, so they seem kind of pointless!
I did think that the primer added a glow to my face, and because my face gets dry it worked in keeping me feel refreshed. If you suffer from oily skin, this primer might not be for you unless you put a matte foundation over it. The primer doesn’t make you look super shiny but gives you a nice glow that lasts all day.
Pros of the NYX Honey Dew Me Up Primer
Let’s look at some of the pros of this product, and why it might be the perfect primer for you!
Adds a Subtle Glow
This product is a great primer to use if you are wanting to add a subtle dewy glow to your face. It isn’t too shiny and works well as a primer to use without foundation.
Smooths and Hydrates the Skin
As someone with dry skin, I loved how it made my face feel smooth and hydrated. Since wearing the product, I think my dry skin has actually got better and feels good even with no makeup on!
This primer isn’t too expensive, but I still think it is high quality. The product comes in a small tub but as you don’t need to use lots of it when doing your makeup, it will last for a while.
One reason I love NYX products is that they are all cruelty-free. This is really important to me and is another reason why I like using the Honey Dew Me Up primer.
The primer is really good for reducing redness and discoloration of the face, leaving it smooth and even.
The Honey Dew Me Up primer contains collagen, which is useful in keeping your skin moisturized.
Cons of the Honey Dew Me Up Primer
Of course, this product isn’t perfect and there are some cons to consider before purchasing it.
Gold Flecks Don’t Look Good
I personally thought the gold flecks in the primer were disappointing and kind of useless. I don’t think that they are really that thought-out, and they add nothing to your look. In fact, I thought they looked a bit silly and uneven.
Difficult to Apply
The spatula that you are supposed to use to put the product on your skin isn’t that great and sometimes it is hard to apply. The primer is gloopy so can fall off the spatula when applying the product.
Might Not Work With Oily Skin
If you are wanting to use this primer without putting on foundation and you have oily skin, this product might not be for you.
How To Apply The NYX Honey Dew Me Up Primer
To apply this primer you use the spatula to scoop out some of the product and put it on your face. You then use your hands or a brush to rub it into your skin. Put it on after your skincare routine and when your face is clean of makeup.
You then must wait a few minutes before putting on any makeup in order for the product to dry and soak into your skin. NYX recommends putting a little bit more primer onto the areas of your face that are super dry or irritated.
Alternatives We Reccomend
If this product isn’t for you, there are still so many NYX primers out there to choose from! They are all just as affordable and are all cruelty-free.
NYX Angel Veil Primer
We recently reviewed the NYX Angel Veil Primer and love the satin glow finish this product gives you! This primer is great for reducing discoloration and shine, giving you the perfect base for your foundation. It is really lightweight, too!
NYX First Base Primer Spray
This is a great primer spray that is affordable and works well! It is perfect for everyday use, and you simply spray it over your face before you begin your makeup routine. It is really long-lasting, too.
NYX Marshmellow Smoothing Primer
The NYX Marshmellow Smoothing Primer is perfect for skin that needs a bit of moisture and makes your skin smooth and soft. It is a great base for makeup and lasts over 12 hours. It also smells of marshmallows, which is pretty cute!
NYX Honey Dew Me Up Review: Final Thoughts
As someone with dry and uneven skin, I really think that this primer is worth it. I really like how it makes my skin feel and it keeps my face moisturized all day long. Although the gold flicks are a bit weird, the product as a whole does allow me to achieve a glowing look suitable for every day.
