My list will feature burgundy lipsticks from a variety of different brands, in different formulas, and even different shades of burgundy. Before reading my list, I suggest going through these tips to find the best burgundy lipstick.
Find the Right Shade of Burgundy
Burgundy is a more complex color than you think. There are different variations of this color that feature cool and warm undertones. I suggest knowing your skin undertones when selecting the best shade of burgundy. Burgundy with warm undertones has more shades of brown and looks amazing on anyone with warm undertones, no matter if you’re pale or have dark skin.
If you have cool undertones, a cool-toned burgundy should be your pick. This looks more like a raspberry color. It’s deep but has more of a purple-red color than a brown-red color.
And if you have neutral undertones, you’re in luck — both shades of burgundy will look amazing on you!
Don’t Confuse Burgundy With Maroon
I have to admit, I only discovered the difference between burgundy and maroon only recently. Actually, I used these terms interchangeably for the longest time. Sure, these colors look very similar, but it’s important to differentiate these colors, so you choose the right one.
Maroon is a brown-based red with virtually no purple in it. Like burgundy, this color is on the darker side. To me, burgundy looks more like the color of wine, whereas maroon is a true dark red.
Choose the Right Formula
Today, there are more lipstick formulas than ever before. Creamy stick lipsticks are still the classic choice, but liquid lipsticks are becoming more popular. Some other popular lip formulas include a tint and a gloss. However, I will be recommending more cream and liquid lipsticks.
Look for Skincare Ingredients
Both creamy and liquid lipsticks can be drying. That’s why it’s best to take a look at the ingredients and see if the lipstick is made with any healthy ingredients. Some common hydrating ingredients in lipstick include shea butter, petrolatum, beeswax, lanolin, and sesame oil.
Research the Brand
You should only buy lipstick from reputable brands. If you’re not sure about your favorite brands, look through your makeup and find the products that you really like. Find the brand name and research their line to see if they carry burgundy lipstick. You can also first look at brands you recognize.
Understand that the amount of time a brand has been in business isn’t the only reliability factor. Some of my personal favorite makeup brands are new!

Even after the initial application, you’ll want the lipstick to feel comfortable on your lips. The lipstick shouldn’t feel heavy or sticky. Ideally, it shouldn’t feel like there’s anything on your lips. But some lipsticks have a slightly glossy or creamy feel, and that’s normal. In addition, the lipstick shouldn’t make your lips feel dry and chapped.
Applicator
This is just an underrated quality that so many other beauty bloggers and reviewers overlook. You want the lip product to apply seamlessly. The size and shape of the lipstick should also be easy for anyone to apply and should conform to all lips. I personally hate it when wand applicators are too large; they cause feathering and don’t conform to my lips that well. The same goes for lipsticks. If the lipstick is too large, the lipstick feathers.
Color Payoff
Some people prefer applying one swipe of lipstick and getting the color payoff they want. Others would rather build on the lip color.
There’s no right or wrong preference. Choose the product option that works for you. Keep in mind that the color payoff depends on the finish. If you’re opting for an opaque matte lipstick, one swipe is usually all you need. But a gloss-based lipstick with a sheer finish will likely require a couple of swipes.
How I Chose These Burgundy Lipsticks
First, I made sure these lipsticks were a true burgundy color. In other words, I’m not choosing deep red or maroon. However, I am trying to be diverse with the undertones; with that being said, some of these burgundy lipsticks may be more on the red or maroon side.
Next, I looked at brand reputability. No matter the price of the lipstick or how long the brand has been in business, I can say from experience that the brand is reliable and makes high-quality products.

If you want a true burgundy, I suggest this one. The color is vibrant — not too brown and not too purple. I love how moisturizing these lipsticks are. They’re made with honey, sesame seed oil, and vitamin E to keep lips nourished. Even with these hydrating ingredients, these lipsticks have a true matte finish.
I’ve had multiple shades of this lipstick, and they last for hours. The only thing I will say is these Maybelline colors aren’t always true. For example, many people complain that this one is darker than what the packaging says.

L’Oreal Paris Age Perfect Luminous Hydrating Lipstick in Perfect Burgundy
Even if you don’t have mature lips, I recommend this lipstick for anyone. I’m personally a big fan of hydrating lipsticks. Because of the matte lipstick trend, they’re so hard to find. The texture is creamy and formulated with nourishing ingredients such as provitamin B5, jojoba oil, and vitamin E, which are appropriate for sensitive skin types. While the color is very translucent, it’s very pretty.

If you’re looking for a satin lipstick with a satin finish, I suggest this one by NYX. It has a rich formula with hydrating ingredients.
Even with the hydrating ingredients and the satin finish, the color payoff is intense. The lipstick still lasts for hours, all thanks to its built-in primer. NYX is known as a brand that makes high-quality products at low prices. While I think NYX is a hit or a miss in general, I do like their lipstick! However, this lipstick does have a scent, so I wouldn’t recommend this to sensitive skin types and anyone who doesn’t like smell.

Covergirl Exhibitionist Demi Matte Lipstick in Infamous
I’ve had a couple of these colors from this line, and they’re some of my favorite lipsticks that Covergirl has released. I love the semi-matte finish — the lipsticks have a slight sheen, but it’s still subtle. The lipsticks have a creamy texture and don’t dry out your lips. They do fade after a while, but they still last a long time.
The only thing I will say is Infamous is more on the cool-toned side, so this isn’t the number one burgundy I recommend to those with warm undertones.

Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Vampire Love
Out of all of these burgundy shades, this one is my favorite. It’s more of a brown-based burgundy but is intensely pigmented. This is the lipstick I would definitely recommend most for those with warm undertones.
Other than the vampy color, I love how lightweight this lipstick is and feels comfortable all day. The lipstick is formulated with vitamin E and avocado oil. It feels nourishing on the lips, so you don’t have to worry about flaky and dry lips.

Huda Beauty Power Bullet Matte Lipstick in Ladies Night
Even though these are on the pricey side, I love this shade. The pigmentation is great, making it the perfect lipstick to use whenever you’re going out. Even though they have a matte finish, the formula is very creamy and moisturizing. But there are some other downsides. The lipstick smudges and doesn’t last as long as competitors, so you’ll have to keep touching it up. Some people even complain the lipstick changes color.
I do recommend this lipstick based on the great color and hydrating aspect. But I don’t suggest getting this lipstick unless you don’t mind fixing it.

If you’re looking for a premium burgundy lipstick, this is the one I recommend. The color is more of a red-burgundy, but it has that perfect wine color. The lipstick has a matte finish but a creamy formula, so you can apply this with ease. However, at $35, this is probably the most expensive lipstick on this list.

Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Lipstick in Cheerful Burgundy
I absolutely love Make Up For Ever lip products! They’re always long-wearing and pigmented. I really want to try these Rouge Artist Lipsticks! I think the shade is so unique. There are a couple of burgundy shades here, but I recommend Cheerful Burgundy. This burgundy is deeper than a lot of the colors on this list, perfect for nighttime wear.

KVD Beauty Everlasting Longwear Liquid Lipstick in Vampira
This is my serious HG burgundy lipstick! I recently had to throw this out since it expired, and I was so sad. It is a lovely shade of red-burgundy that’s very deep. It’s long-wearing and even lasts while you’re drinking. However, you can easily remove it with makeup remover. It also doesn’t smear or transfer.
The only reason that this lipstick is last is the color. I personally love it, but it’s very dark. As a red-based burgundy, I wouldn’t recommend this one to those with cool undertones.

Pulling Off the Perfect Burgundy Makeup Look
Now that you have your burgundy lipstick, you may not know how to rock it. First, it’s important to know the best colors with burgundy. I recommend wearing teal or green eyeshadow with burgundy lipstick. Both color combinations are stunning, especially on darker skin tones. Even if you have a lighter skin tone, this color combination is very dramatic. Green is a vibrant color, and burgundy is vampy, so the color combination works.
However, if you want to keep things simple, a classic black pencil liner is always the way to go. If you do want to add something more to your eyes without too much drama, I suggest metallic or sparkling eyeliner. Urban Decay has some great colors, such as their 24/7 Glide-On Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil in Uzi, which is a dark and shimmering gunmetal color.
No matter which eye look you choose, finish it off with some intense lashes. Lashes give you that perfect doe-eyed look, and I think this feminine eye look pairs amazingly with a bold lip. You can either opt for false lashes or intense mascara. I personally love Tarte’s Maneater Mascara if you want a voluptuous eyelash look without false lashes. Make sure you apply mascara to your top and bottom lashes for the ultimate eyelash look!

Answer: The first place you should start is with your undertones. You can either have a warm, cool, or neutral undertone. I will break down some lipstick recommendations based on your undertone.

Neutral – You’re in luck! Nearly every color looks amazing on you. I have neutral undertones, and even though I hate the color pink, magenta looks amazing on me. For natural colors, go for ones with more peach in them. But rose and nude also look great on this undertone.
Next, consider if you have a dark, medium, or light skin tone.
Dark – All dark colors look amazing on you. If you don’t want deep burgundy, I suggest trying a dark neutral-based or blue-toned red.
Medium – Red lipstick was made for you! Try a light and bright red if you’re daring.
Light – Nearly any color works for you! I recommend reds and pinks the most, especially bright shades.
