Fenty Beauty Lip Paint Review: Will You Love This Lip Paint?

I was so excited to try this Fenty lip stain because I’ve heard so much about it from other beauty influencers that I follow. This particular lip stain has actually been on the market for a few years now, but I had never gotten around to playing around with it or wearing it out.

I had to try the signature coral-red color that Rhianna is always seen wearing on her social media pages; I am so excited to let you know how my experience was with this particular product.

Given that we all are wearing masks a lot these days I knew that this lipstick had to withstand a few tests with my mask as well as a test with some hot drinks and all-day wear. So without further ado let’s jump into this review!

Key Features

The Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint is a weightless long-wearing lipstick that has a soft matte finish and a weightless feel. This product is free from parabens and is also vegan, which is a plus for those looking to start shopping for more sustainable options.

There are 8 shades to choose from; there are a few nude shades for varying skin tones and then some fun bright colors that are described by the brand as ‘head-turning shades’. For this particular review, I chose a bright coral shade called ‘Unattached’, but I also have my eye on their bright red called ‘Uncensored’.

Pros:

  • Super smooth application that doesn’t leave a lip ‘cracking’ effect
  • Bold and opaque colour application on the first swipe; I find that there’s no need to dip into the tube again
  • Gorgeous packaging that fits into most purses and bags
  • Great range of bold shades that suit every skin tone
  • Fine doe tip applicator makes it easy to get in the outer corners of your lips

Cons:

  • The lipstick can smudge if you’re not careful after your initial application
  • It doesn’t stand up too well to hot drinks or wearing your mask for long periods of time
  • There aren’t many nude shades, however, this range is more suited for a bold lip
  • Does transfer quite a bit onto other objects (cups, cutlery, food, etc.)

Where and What To Buy

As previously mentioned, the Stunna Lip Paint comes in eight different shades that suit every skin tone; the shades themselves are more towards the bold side, so if you’re looking for more of a ‘nude’ shade, I would take a look into her Slip Shine Lipstick lineup.

If you’re looking to purchase this lipstick or any other Fenty Beauty products, I would recommend shopping at your local Sephora, as I’ve found that’s the best place to find the entire lineup. However, if you live in Ireland or the UK, you can find Fenty Beauty at Boots and Harvey Nichols and if you live in the U.S., you can also shop at Kohls. If you don’t mind online shopping before trying the different shades, then FentyBeauty.com is another option for you!

First Impressions & Application

I love the look of the packaging that Rihanna has created here; the lipstick tubing almost reminds me of a stiletto. What else I love about this product is the doe-foot applicator; it’s smaller and more round than most regular applicators, which makes it really easy to control when applying to the lips.

For me, this lipstick was fun and easy to apply; I found that I didn’t even need to use a lip liner to fill in the color. However, I would recommend using one if you want this lipstick to stay put. I absolutely love how smooth the lipstick looked on my lips; I have a lot of ridges on my lips, so most liquid lipsticks intensify them quite a bit. The color is also quite unique, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a shade that’s both bold but not too dramatic at the same time.

Something that I did notice about the initial application was that the lipstick took quite a long time to dry down; during this period, you have to be quite careful about not smudging the lipstick. For myself, I didn’t wait long enough and quickly blotted it with a tissue; it went everywhere on my bottom lip and I had to take a q-tip and tidy everything up. I would definitely say to give this lipstick a couple of minutes before doing anything else so that you avoid this issue.

Something else you can do to aid in the dry time is to take a piece of tissue paper and hold it up to your lips and then blot setting powder lightly with a brush on the other side!

All-Day Wear

Given that there were a few speed bumps with the initial application, I’m quite impressed at how well this lipstick stayed on for the majority of the day. I did a few different tests with both my fabric mask and a hot cup of coffee and I think it’s safe to say that this is where the lipstick’s wear ran into some trouble; I left behind a little trail of red-coral lipstick pretty much everywhere that I went.

Even though the mask and mug tests took off quite a few layers of the lipstick, it’s still on there quite well, with the exception of my inner lip. The good thing about this is that it’s easy to reapply where it came off and because the finish of the lipstick is smooth, it shouldn’t cause too much of a ‘cracking’ effect.

The one significant issue with this lipstick is that it can displace and almost stain other areas of the face if it gets smudged; you can probably see that the area just outside of my upper lipline is slightly stained with the portion that migrated from my mask. Because of this, I would recommend bringing a compact face powder with you if you wear this lipstick out and about for a long period of time; if you do get staining, you can quickly dab at your face with a damp tissue and then apply a bit of face powder to cover any lingering redness.

Alternatives

ColorPop Ultra Matte Lip

ColorPop Ultra Matte Lip

This liquid lipstick is said to pose the same one-swipe opaque coverage as the Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint. This product comes in fourteen different shades that range from bold colors to nude shades for a wide range of skin tones.

ColorPop claims that this lipstick dries down quickly and transforms into a transfer-proof finish so that you can rest assured it won’t fade throughout the day. If you’re looking for a similar shade to the iconic red Stunna Lip Paint shade, try ColorPop’s shade ‘Creeper’, which is a true blue-red.

Dose of Colors Liquid Matte Lipstick

Dose of Colors Liquid Matte Lipstick

This lipstick comes in a whopping forty-one shades, so you won’t have to worry about a lack of unique colours to shop from. Dose of Colors describes this liquid lipstick as a creamy and comfortable matte that dries down to a long-wearing weightless finish. The reviews on this lipstick are all very positive, so you can shop on their website with confidence

Milani Amore Matte Lip Crème

The Amore Matte Lip Crème is newer to the scene but has already received rave reviews from customers. The finish is quite similar to the Stunna Lip Paint, being both super-saturated and smooth upon initial application.

This particular product comes in 24 different shades, with a mix of both bold and nude hues to choose from. What is really cool about the packaging, is that the applicator is double-sided, meaning you can control your strokes a little easier; it can sometimes be difficult to apply liquid lipsticks, but Milani makes it simple & quick!

Jouer Cosmetics Long-Wear Lip Crème Liquid Lipstick

The Jouer Cosmetics Lip Crème offers a weightless, full-coverage finish that is sure to make a bold statement in your makeup arsenal. It comes in seven matte colors and one metallic color, so you have a few different options to choose from.

The formula contains Vitamin E, so your lips will stay moisturized and are less likely to have that lip ‘cracking’ or drying effect that some liquid lipsticks can give you. You also can feel safe using this lipstick as it is formulated without parabens, sulfates, or phthalates.

Too Faced Melted Matte Liquid Lipstick

This liquid lipstick has been on the market for quite some time now; it’s unique ‘melted’ formula is what got it recognition when it first came onto the makeup scene. Too Faced describes this liquid lip as having the staying power of a lip stain with the intense color payoff of a liquid lipstick.

Something that is unique about this product is that it’s infused with a non-sting plumping element, Volulip™. If you want to pick up one of their shades, I would recommend shopping on their U.S. site, as they have all 17 colors available there, while Sephora only seems to have seven available shades at the moment.

FAQs

Question: Are quick-dry liquid lipsticks better?

Answer: No, not necessarily. I do find that quick-dry liquid lipsticks can be handier when it comes to being fast & efficient in the morning, however, you can get a super dry and chapped lip effect if your lips aren’t well-moisturized beforehand.

I personally don’t mind waiting a couple of minutes more so that the formula has time to set and dry properly on my lips; if this is the case, it usually means the finish will be more weightless and comfortable for all-day wear. If you already have a quick-dry liquid lipstick at home, I would recommend applying a moisturizing lip primer underneath so that you can avoid any dryness-make sure not to use chapstick, however, because this can repel the product.

Question: How Can I Make Sure That I Don’t Stain My Face With Liquid Lipstick?

Answer: Don’t fret, there are a few things you can do to make sure that you don’t end up with liquid lipstick stains all over your face! First, always make sure that you apply a lip primer and matching lip liner underneath, so that the liquid lipstick has something to stick to; this will ensure that when you’re first applying it, that it won’t bleed out of your lipline and create stains on your face.

Next, what you can do is clean up any mistakes with a q-tip and a little bit of micellar water; the reason I say to use micellar water is that if you use an oil-based cleanser, it’ll leak onto the rest of your application and you’ll be left with a huge lipstick mess. Lastly, seal in your application with some colorless face powder so that it can last all day without any issues!

Question: Does Fenty Beauty have any matching lip liners to go with the Stunna Lip Paint?

Answer: Unfortunately, Fenty Beauty doesn’t have any lip liners in their product line at the moment, however, they do have a great lip primer! If you’re looking to purchase good quality liners for your Stunna Lip Paint, both M.A.C. Cosmetics and the Sephora Collection have a huge selection that are sure to match any of the available Fenty colors.
