M.A.C. Lustre Lipstick Review

M.A.C. Lustre Lipstick Review: You Will Love The Shade Range

It’s hard to believe that MAC has been around since 1984 and the founders, Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo made the first Mac products at home. Since then, MAC has become one of the biggest names in beauty.

Out of all MAC products, their lipsticks are the ones I hear about the most frequently. The first high-end makeup product I actually ever purchased was a MAC lipstick in bright pink, and I carried that around with me all years as if my life depended on it.

Since then, Mac has increased their lipstick line even more.

They offer different formulas, including the innovative Lustreglass lipstick. The Lusterglass Lipsticks are a revamped form of the original Luster Lipsticks, and with the improved formula comes new shades. In this M.A.C. Lustre Lipstick Review, I reviewed the Lusterglass lipstick in shades Local Celeb and Glossed and Found.

About the Lusterglass Lipsticks

Chandelier is a unique lipstick. It offers the shine of a lip gloss with the pigment of a lipstick. Mac describes the color as sheer, but even one swipe gave me an impressive color payoff. The color is also buildable, so you can go more intense if you want.

The Lusterglass is the revamped Luster lipstick. Mac added more shades and ingredients that your lips will love, such as raspberry seed and olive oil. The lipstick applies creamy but leaves to a glossy finish, so you get the benefits of both lipstick and lip gloss.

The lipstick wears comfortably. The gloss isn’t sticky and the formula isn’t too thick. Rather, my lips feel soft. Overall, this lipstick is very moisturizing, glossy, and the colors are ideal for daily wear.

The Shades I Choose

With so many colors to choose from, it was honestly difficult to select one. I decided to go with Local Celeb, which is described as burnt orange, and Glossed and Found, with a mid-tone sparkly red. Both colors are beautiful. However, there are some things to note with these two choices.

Lusterglass Lipsticks

First, Local Celeb is a little more orange than I was expecting. Looking at the models on the website, the color looks like a beigey orange.

Lusterglass Lipsticks

I thought it was such a pretty and unique colour, so I ordered it. However, the color definitely looks like more of an intense orange on me. It’s not a hit-or-miss but is something to note.

MAC Lusterglass Lipstick

The other color I ordered was Glossed and Found. Looking at the product, it has a pearly sparkle to it.

You pretty much can’t see any sparkles when you put on the lipstick. It’s not a big deal, but still pretty disappointing.

Application

I wasn’t sure what to expect with these lipsticks. The color is supposed to be sheer and buildable, yet the formula is very glossy. I was pleasantly surprised to see the impressive pigment immediately upon application. The formula is very glossy and glides on effortlessly.

Finish

If you like your shiny lipsticks, then you’re in for a treat! Lusterglass lipsticks have a glossy finish, looking like a more pigmented lip gloss. They’re also super moisturizing, which is a plus for me.

But there are some downsides. For example, the color Glossed and Found feathered a bit. Surprisingly, Local Celeb didn’t feather at all, so I guess the feathering depends on which lipstick you buy.

The color also goes from a pigmented gloss-like finish to almost a light tint. I will focus more on this in the next section.

Lasting Power

The MAC website states the lipstick is long-wearing. I was a little skeptical about this since it’s a gloss-based lipstick. And my assumptions were correct.

As stated previously, the glossy and pigmented look doesn’t last forever. Rather, the lipstick fades on its own to a subtle tint. Honestly, that’s better than nothing.

I was curious to see how the lipstick lasted after drinking. I took a couple of sips of coffee as I was writing this review. The pigmentation weakened, but there was still color on my lips. With each sip, the color reduced to a subtle tint.

After an hour or so, I ate lunch. From here, the color pretty much disappeared from my lips. Oh well.

Buildable Color

I was curious to see how well the color builds and what it looks like. I tried this with Local Celeb.

As stated previously, one coat gave me an orangey color — too much orange than what I was expecting. But two coats darkened the color. Unfortunately, it also made the lipstick bleed. The third coat darkened the lipstick more and the bleeding worsened. But this is nothing some lip liner and tissue paper can’t fix.

Where to Buy the Lusterglass Lipstick

I bought my lipsticks online. You can also buy the Lusterglass lipstick from any Mac store as well as Nordstrom.

Alternatives

The Lusterglass lipsticks offer shiny color payoff, a very unique concept from one of the most well-respected makeup brands. But other cosmetic companies have similar products.

YSL Rouge Pur Couture SPF Lipstick

While these lipsticks don’t have a glossy finish, they are intense with intense hydration. The lipstick is available in a wide variety of shades and you can choose either a satin or matte finish.

L’Oreal Color Riche Shine Lipstick

L'Oreal Color Riche Shine Lipstick

This is probably the best drugstore dupe for the Mac Lustreglass Lipstick. These L’Oreal lipsticks drench your lips in color, hydrate your lips, and the formula is very creamy. The finish is described as a “luminous satin finish,” so you get all the benefits of the Mac Lusterglass at half the price.

Estee Lauder Pure Color Envy

While this lipstick doesn’t offer the glossy finish of the Lusterglass lipsticks, these lipsticks are with a moisture complex for serious color plus hydration. Watching the video review by hueyyrouge, the pigments are very complex and multi-faceted. Even the neutral shades define your lips.

I can’t believe I have never heard of this lipstick before because this is really interesting!

Revlon Super Lustrous Melting Glass Shine Lipstick

Revlon Super Lustrous Melting Glass Shine Lipstick

While the L’Oreal lipstick I mentioned earlier is a great cheap dupe to the Lusterglass lipsticks, I’m honestly not crazy about L’Oreal lip products. I wanted to find another cheap dupe, which is why I’m glad I came across this Revlon lipstick.

The Revlon one is slightly different because it’s more like a chapstick formula than a lip gloss. It’s a very moisturizing product so your lips feel very soft. The pigment payoff is very subtle. But like Lusterglass, the formula is extremely creamy and has a shiny finish.

Chanel Rouge Coco Bloom Lip Color

Chanel Rouge Coco Bloom Lip Color

If you really want a luxurious alternative to the Lusterglass lipsticks, you’ll love the Chanel Rouge Coco Bloom Lip Color. These lipsticks have a shiny finish with long-lasting color. The lipstick is packed with hydrating ingredients, so this will become your new favorite lipstick.

FAQs

Question: What Is a Lipstick Luster?

Answer: Answer: MAC’s Lusterglass lipstick fits in a specific category. MAC calls it a Lipstick Luster while other brands refer to it as “glossy” or “shiny.” The formula is semi-glossy and usually has a subtle color payoff. Most of these lipsticks have hydration benefits, so these lipsticks are ideal for those who want a lipstick but struggle with constantly dry lips. While I think the Lusterglass lipsticks have a great color payoff, it’s not as bold as some of their other lipsticks.

Question: What Is the Best-Selling Mac Lipstick?

Answer: MAC’s Matte Lipstick in shade Ruby Woo is their best-selling lipstick. The shade is a classic Hollywood red that’s coveted by so many people. The undertones aren’t too cool or too warm, so this lipstick can suit everyone.

Question: Can You Get Free MAC Products?

Answer: When I put in an order for a MAC lipstick last month or so, I received a mini face primer as a sample. I actually love the primer (I think it’s the Prep+Prime) and used it for a while. When I ordered these lipsticks for review, I was able to get another lipstick for $10! I chose the Satin Lipstick in Paramount, which is a very pretty dark beige. It has a satin finish, which is the middle-ground between a creamy/glossy and matte finish. The lipstick fades quickly and you have to reapply it, but I love it.

Question: What Are Other Ways Can I Get Free Makeup?

Answer: While not exactly free, I use Sephora’s Beauty Insider Program and Offers. With the Beauty Insider Program, you can earn points on your purchases and exchange them for products. Their online offers are similar. You can enter a promo code when you spend a certain amount of money. While the products are smaller in size, they’re still free. I take advantage of this when I need a product and don’t have the money for it.

This is also a great way to get free lipsticks and perfume. I also collect these small skin and hair care products and use them when I travel. Sephora is not the only place to take advantage of free makeup products. When you shop at the drugstore, you often find “buy one, get one free” sales on different makeup brands. Many makeup brands also host makeup giveaways, a free product with a purchase, free products for members of rewards programs, and you can even join product testing panels. Most brands will also give you a free product if the one you bought is defective.

Question: Which Mac Products Are the Best?

Answer: I love their lipsticks, primers, and eyeliners the best. I’ve tried their eyeshadow and it was okay (prefer other brands like Urban Decay). Some of their other high-rated products include concealer, highlighter, blush, and finishing powder.

Question: Did Jennifer Anniston Wear Mac Lipstick on Friends ?

Answer: For some reason, the internet has been obsessed with Jennifer Anniston’s makeup on the show Friends , specifically her brown lipstick. And we recently learned the exact products the makeup artist used. In an interview, Friends makeup artist Robin Siegel used the MAC lip pencil in Spice and paired it with the MAC Luster lipstick in Touch. Touch is a light-medium brown that’s warm-toned.
Unfortunately, that shade is currently discontinued and MAC doesn’t have an exact shade that matches Touch. If you want a similar dupe, I suggest choosing the Lusterglass lipstick in shade Hug Me for a nude softer or Can’t Dull My Shine if you want a darker brown.

Question: What’s the Difference Between a Shiny and Matte Finish?

Answer: Shiny finishes look more like lip gloss. They’re often moisturizing and still provide a decent dose of color. If you want an intense color payoff, choose matte lipstick. Matte lipsticks are dry and usually aren’t sparkly. Since there’s no lip gloss, the color lasts longer and enhances the lips more. Add matte lipsticks are drying, so you have to be careful about that.

Bottom line

MAC is one of the most prestigious brands in the world and they’re famous for their extensive lipsticks. They’re especially known for their Luster lipstick, now called the Lusterglass lipstick. These lipsticks are extremely moisturizing with a glossy finish. While the colors are very pigmented, they fade to a tint and there is a tendency to feather.

I like the Lusterglass lipsticks, but I suggest trying a cheaper double before settling on these lipsticks.
